Small Business Super Clearing House moving to ATO 17 January 2018 Uncategorized Extract from ATO website: Tuesday 16 January, 2018 On February 26, the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) will join the ATO’s online services. This will streamline how you use the SBSCH. It will also include extra functionality, such as the ability to sort employee listings and payment by credit card. If you are a BAS or Tax Agent, the SBSCH will be accessible via the Tax and BAS Agent Portals under the ‘Manage Employees’ menu. If you are a business you will be able to access the SBSCH within the Business Portal. The SBSCH will be unavailable from February 20 – 25 while the ATO transfer the data into their online services. If you, or you have clients that pay super guarantee monthly, the ATO recommend they complete their transactions before this period. The ATO are holding webinars from February 6 – 8 that will provide information to guide you through the new SBSCH. The Simpler BAS commences July 2017 14 May 2017 Uncategorized The ATO are reducing the amount of GST information required for BAS to simplify GST bookkeeping and reporting requirements. According to the ATO,a simpler BAS will give small businesses time and cost savings by simplifying account set up, GST bookkeeping and BAS preparation. Businesses will be able to more easily classify transactions and prepare and lodge their BAS… but has the legislation changed? From 1 July 2017, small businesses will only need to report three fields on their BAS: GST on sales, GST on purchases and Total sales (G1) – that’s it! This removes the need to report on Capital purchases, Export Sales and Free Sales, but poses the question: Do bookkeepers and business owners still need to code their entries the same way to track these types of entries? Superstream deadline 31st October! 2 November 2016 Uncategorized The ATO is reminding medium and large employers that the timeframe for SuperStream compliance runs out on 31 October. The ATO previously announced it would allow employers (with 20 or more employees) an additional four months to adopt SuperStream, following the 30 June deadline. With the extended deadline only days away, the ATO says it will soon turn its attention to identifying those employers not yet complying with SuperStream requirements. Philip Hind, ATO National Program Manager, Data Standards and E-Commerce (SuperStream) said the ATO will continue to support those businesses making a genuine attempt to get ready. “From 1 November we will be focussing more attention on employers who have been identified as non-compliant with SuperStream,” he said. “We have been working with stakeholders to identify areas where employers may need additional guidance to become SuperStream compliant. ‘We will continue to provide support to those making a genuine attempt to get ready as we want to ensure all employers are able to start using SuperStream and benefit from the time and cost savings.” Employers with more than 200 employees who are not going to make the 31 October deadline should advise the ATO of their implementation plans. Advice on how to provide this information is available on the ATO’s SuperStream website. Mr Hind says there are a variety of options available for employers to adopt SuperStream, including upgrading payroll software, using a clearing house service or their default super fund’s portal. He says feedback from employers has been positive. “Over 350,000 employers nationwide have made the switch to SuperStream to make their super contributions. We’re hearing about employers who have experienced an enormous reduction in the amount of time it takes to process super.” With the majority of medium and large businesses already using SuperStream, all remaining employers are urged to make sure they have plans in place to adopt SuperStream now. If employers are not making a genuine attempt to implement SuperStream penalties may be applied. Small employers (with 19 or fewer employers) have until 30 June 2016 to finalise their SuperStream implementation. IT glitch, failure to communicate hurt NDIS launch 31 August 2016 Uncategorized Disappointing to see such key services affected: An urgent review by consultants PwC into a flawed computer system that crippled the $22 billion National Disability Insurance Scheme has revealed a technical problem coupled with poor information led to disruptions and delays for service providers and clients, and a slump in the number of plans approved. Although the review, to be delivered to Social Services Minister Christian Porter today, described the technical glitch as short-lived, the IT problem and poor communication by the National Disability Insurance Agency resulted in errors being entered into the new MyPlace payment portal. “As a result, there were disruptions and delays in payments being made to a group of providers and participants through the payment portal,” Mr Porter told The Australian yesterday. “Based on initial advice from PwC, as well as a short-lived technical issue experienced by bulk service providers, there was also an issue around the adequacy of information provided to users of the payment portal, which led to errors in inputting necessary information.” Mr Porter insisted “the situation is improving rapidly and significantly”, saying that successful payments to providers and participants had increased from about 70 per cent to 96 per cent. However, he said while the NDIA had diverted resources to resolve the early IT issues as quickly as possible, there was a “flow-on effect” of a slowdown in the rate of plan approvals for the large number of people deemed eligible for the scheme. “Currently, more than 15,000 people have been deemed eligible for the scheme since July 1, which is more than 78 per cent of the bilateral target for the first quarter of transition,” he said. “More than 5000 of those people have commenced the planning process or had their plan approved.” Since the online portal payment problems arose in June, Mr Porter and Assistant Disabilities Minister Jane Prentice have been scrambling to restore faith in an ambitious national rollout that involves assessing and approving individual plans for 430,000 people during the next three years. On August 5, the ministers were forced to commission an urgent review by PwC into the flawed IT system, designed in-house and used by the NDIA, that was blamed for some providers being left unpaid and some people being unable to access services. Amid the chaos, some therapists withdrew services and some parents of disabled children were harassed by debt collectors. Yesterday, Mr Porter said he had asked the chair of the NDIA board to “take action to resolve outstanding issues around information to portal users and ensure that transitional plan approval remains on target in the first two quarters of transition”. He also has ordered the establishment of an NDIS transition management team to address all outstanding portal issues and plan approval targets; authorised the appointment of a chief operating officer to oversee all of the NDIA’s operational matters during the transition to full scheme rollout; sought more robust reporting on key metrics around portal issue resolution and plan approval rates; and sought the establishment of stronger information sharing. An extra 100 staff from the departments of social services and human services had been assigned to the NDIA.
